Kabardino-Balkarian State University is formed in 1932 as a pedagogical institute and in the year 1957 was transformed into university.

According to the mission of the Kabardino-Balkarian State university after Kh.M.Berbekov: the KBSU – is a higher educational institution, equally effectively executing the educational and scientific activities on the basis of principles of integration of science and education, it is a leading university of the South of Russia, solving the tasks of federal and regional level in the area of education, science, culture, informatization and enlightenment.

In the year 2011, the KBSU is included into the state-funded program of strategic development of higher educational institutions of Russia by the Ministry of Education and Science.

In the years 2010-2011 the R&D work in KBSU was conducted on all 6 priority direction of modernization and technological development of Russian economy, 5 priority directions of development of science, technology and machinery of Russian Federation (from 8 denoted directions), and by 23 critical technologies for Russia, within the list confirmed 7 July 2011 by the Order of the President of Russian Federation, as well as 20 branches of science.

Nowadays R&D in the KBSU is conducted on all chairs, within 3 Research Institutions, 23 centres (including the Center for joint usage of unique scientific equipment, which is enlisted in the network of such centers), botanical garden and 52 laboratories, 8 of which are created together with Russian Academy of Sciences, and one jointly with Academy of Science of Ukraine.

Within the Federal Focused Program "Research and development on priority directions of scientific and technological complexes of Russia for 2007-2012 years" on the scientific basis of KBSU was created North Caucasian Center for patent and methodology support of the works in the area of introduction into civic usage of the objects of intellectual property in the sphere of nanoindustry and export of production of the organizations of national nanotechnological network.

To research KBSU in the last 2 years has been drawn three full members of the RAS, 3 Corresponding Members of RAS, a member of RAO, 5 Honored Scientist of Russia, 39 Honoured Scientists of the CBD, 188 doctors, 618 candidates, 22 doctoral, 363 graduate student.

University implements measures aimed at increasing participation in academic competitions on the program of the Ministry of Education and Science, and various research foundations, the conclusion of economic agreements.

Priorities research programs for KBSU:

Nanophysics, nanochemistry, nanotechnology and nanomaterials;

Geodynamics and Geophysics;

Cosmology and Astrophysics;

Energy, including hydrogen-based;

Polymer Science;

Medical and biological research;

History of Southern Russia and the culture of the peoples of the North Caucasus;

Philology, including the languages of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic

Actively carried out research and development in the following areas: physics of surface and interfacial phenomena, electrochemistry, physical chemistry, biodiversity of the Central Caucasus, the mountain ecosystem and human health, the history of Russia and the North Caucasus, the problems of development and education of the individual in today's educational environment, the Russian language in a multiethnic environment, etc.

To date, the university has all the modern surface spectroscopic methods of research, along with a set of classical physicochemical methods developed original experimental setup for studying the composition and structure of surfaces and processes absorbing layers of solids and liquids, to study the composition and structure of the surface layer of metals and semiconductors, electron diffraction methods at low energies, Auger electron spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and other. University helium liquefier allows the study of different samples at cryogenic temperatures (including the active search for and synthesis of superconducting materials).

Research is being conducted in nanophysics, nanochemistry, nanotechnology and nanomaterials.

The staff of the university does a preparatory work for the production of nanoscale microwave oscillators multidiodes for a range of 30-300 GHz. The developed products are quite competitive compared to alternative products on the market of microwave components millimeter scale.

For many years KBSU vigorously pursued applied research in the physics of X-rays. There are currently eight modifications of the high X-ray image amplifier (PRI), exceeding many domestic and foreign counterparts on the resolution, sensitivity (dose reduction), etc.

Significant results were obtained in studies on the topic "Development of technology for production of nanoscale structures with semiconductor quantum dots in semiconducting and dielectric matrices for the products of quantum and optical electronics."

As part of research on hydrogen energy KBSU researchers performed a project "Non-platine  electrocatalysts for chemical current sources." Received nanopowder producs of carbide, tungsten and tungsten half-carbids by high-temperature electrochemical synthesis, being tested at the Institute for Hydrogen Energy and Plasma Technologies, Russian Research Centre "Kurchatov Institute" as electrode materials in electrolyzers to produce hydrogen and fuel cells with a conductive polymer electrolyte.

In KBSU developed a number of promising technologies, such as:

Technology of electrochemical synthesis of nanoscale powders;

High-technology coating on superhard materials;

Technology of very high quality of thin coatings on various materials;

Technologies for diagnosis and dielectric, metallic and semiconducting substrates for various purposes with given properties;

Technology of vacuum-tight metal-ceramic compositions;

Technology-based management adhesion of thin functional layers to substrates;

Control technology of surface parameters of materials of different functional purpose;

Technology is lowering the operating temperature of the compound (fusion) of heterogeneous materials;

Technology for creating nanostructured materials;

Technology of extraction of diamonds and valuable components of spent carbide matrix of diamond tools, etc.

In 2011, scientists KBSU continued to work in the programs of the Presidium of the RAS in the physics of high energy density. Research conducted at the University Programme Department of Energy, Engineering, Mechanics and Control Processes, Academy of Sciences, supported by the Scientific Council of RAS on Thermophysics, Scientific Council on Plasma Physics and Science Council of RAS on Complex Problem 'low-temperature plasma physics. "

Five laboratories established in KBSU with the Academy of Sciences, studied the issues of geophysics, geodynamics, and wave propagation in layered media, monitor natural phenomena in the region of Elbrus. Between KBSU, INR, UIPE Sciences, IDG RAS and SAI signed an agreement on joint experimental work in the area of Elbrus volcanic center. In 2009-2011, the university with the support of the Russian Federation Ministry of Education commissioned a comprehensive geophysical observatory "Gals" to carry out continuous monitoring of geophysical area of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic and adjacent regions in order to predict conditions for the emergence and development of major natural disasters.

One of the key indicators of demand is the amount of university research and development work performed by the university.

The average amount of research per unit of science-teaching staff for five years for KBSU is 180.5 thousand rubles, which is 10 times higher than the rate criterion for the universities of Russia (18 thousand rubles.).

In 2011, the patent department KBSU has done the necessary work on the conservation, protection of intellectual property and the introduction into circulation of the results of intellectual activities of scientists and students KBSU:

- applied for inventions and useful models - 46;
- obtained patents for inventions and useful models - 24;
- support of patents -- 62;
- received certificates for a computer program - 2;
- performed patent researches and reports drawn up in accordance with GOST P 15.011-96 "System of development and launch of new products. Patent researches.            - the content and order of the "- 6;
- registered in Rospatent licensing agreements for the right to use intellectual property of KBSU with other organizations - 2.
In 2011, despite the objective difficulties, the university held on the basis of university 20 scientific and educational activities: 9 - International scientific events, 3 – All-Russian scientific activities 5 - regional research activities, 3 - republic activities.
An analysis of international scientific relations of KBSU shows that the most effective in recent years was a collaboration with the University of Miskolc (Hungary) in terms of scientific development of nanochemistry, with the University of Granada (Spain) on joint research by modern problems of sociology and linguistics; with the Institute of Physics and Astronomy, Aarhus (Denmark) and with the Tokyo Gakugey University (Japan) in physics and joint training, with the Institute of Mathematics of Ukraine,etc.
The university is involved in a project to create a set of equipment for studying the interaction of protons with antiprotons (experiment «PANDA»), implements the projects supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
The university has the status of the participant of the 6th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development of the European Union (FP6) (performed in conjunction with the University of Paris).
In 2011, the scientific relations were established with the Jena University after Friedrich Schiller and Free University of Berlin. Also were signed:
- agreement between KBSU the company Hikari Innovations (Republic Korea) (Hikari Innovasion Co., Ltd) (Republic Korea) (July 5, 2011);
- agreement between KBSU and Science Institute of hospitalization and treatment (Rome, Italy) (Instituto di Ricovero e Cura a Carattere Scientifico, Roma) (July 4, 2011).
Particular attention in the university is paid to scientific research work of students (NIRS).
Both Russian and students from near and far abroad in the last 2 years were:
- In the annual All-Russian Competition of young people education institutions and research organizations to better work, "My legislative initiative", and in this year there was held for them all-Russian Student Scientific and Practical Conference "Law and the state in a globalizing world."
- In the work organized by university with financial support International Scientific Conference of Students and Young Scientists 'Perspective 2011'.

KBSU Administration considers it necessary to give full support for innovation activity in KBSU and implement their own development into practice. Large effective university - is a major factor in the development of innovative potential.
The scale and effectiveness of the training and certification of scientific and pedagogical personnel of high qualification in university supplemented by innovative component. KBSU can do functions as a system coordinator for reconstruction and development of businesses in the KBR and the southern region.               To ensure effective achievement of objectives in the infrastructure of the university created innovative investment structures (centers, complexes, small businesses, institutions). Training, research and innovation systems are the most perspective to build on their base of regional innovation and investment network, which should act as a "bridge" linking science and production in all regions and industries.          Through such the development of innovative structures of KBSU can effectively integrate the results of higher education, academic and industry science of region and Russia as well as advanced science results of the international community in creating, realization of innovative projects and development of innovative activity, which is a prerequisite for the creating of an effective innovative economy in the country.
Training that can effectively manage innovation processes, develop and implement innovative projects is a priority in the KBSU.
The university has accumulated a considerable number of completed major scientific and technological developments. Currently, the bank of innovative projects is formed, based on the results of fundamental and applied research of scientists of KBSU in many areas of science and technology. The Bank includes 90 projects of various stages of completion (of which over 20 are ready for commercial implementation), and covers many areas of physics, chemistry, mechanical engineering, building materials, biology, medicine, and others.

6. Joint Exhibition "KBSU - Today", an exhibition of design college an exhibition-presentation of innovative projects of young scientists KBSU.
The realize of work on the creating and implementation in industrial production composition and technology of getting competitive on the world market of 3 types of materials for the electrical industry products with high heat resistance, fire resistance and barrier properties:
- nanocomposite polymer material for cable insulation;
- nanocomposite polymer material for cable shell;
- nanocomposite polymer material for cable fill.
Created by the production will be the first in its field and will provide:
- increased manufacturability perspective of nanocomposite materials;
- import substitution of the composite polymer material and layered silicate nanofiller.

KBSU several years among the top ten Russian universities, as evidenced by the tables below.
Increase the number of foreign students will entail the development of new teaching methods with the use of innovative technologies and technical means.

Kabardino-Balkarian State University has been preparing specialists for foreign countries since 1966. KBSU prepared more than 2,500 specialists for foreign countries, 33 candidates of sciences, 4 PhD, 43 registrars,  18 interns, 27 people has probation periods.

Graduates KBSU successfully operate in different spheres of economic, political, scientific and educational activities in over 40 countries of residence. Among them are diplomats, parliamentarians, ministers, generals, professors, and heads of large companies and institutions. Many of them are the members of the Alumni Association of Russian universities and help in export of educational services.
Diploma of KBSU recognized in the world and has a priority in many countries of the Middle East.
The principles of the Bologna Convention are realized at the University, and along with the diploma of KBSU all graduates receive the Diploma Supplement European sample (Diploma Supplement), that gives them the wide range of opportunities to realize the knowledge obtained in Russia.
The contingent of foreign students is increasing at the Kabardino-Balkarian State University, especially in recent years.  In the 2010-2011 academic years the number of foreign students was 406 students, 273of whom studied on state line, i.e., 67.2%, and in the current 2011-2012 school year – 442, 290of them studied on state line, i.e., 65.6%.
17 students have been deducted for academic failure in the 2010-2011 academic year, and 6 students in the 2011-2012 school year.
Pre-university training at the preparatory department for foreign citizens is held at the Kabardino-Balkarian State University. Order of the USSR State Committee for it opening has been published in the 09th of July, 1990.

Educational and methodological literature foreign students.
The Library Foundation of KBSU has mandatory and recommended training and instructional literature for foreign students. Educational literature has 45 titles of textbooks, teaching aids and educational facilities, many of which are equipped with Russian-foreign dictionaries for all levels of education from elementary to advanced and final stages.
There are tutorials on the scientific style of speech: Philology, biomedical, technical skills that are available both at the preparatory department, and by 1-2 courses of different faculties.
Provision of educational literature students of the preparatory department is 40%.
About 60% of publications intended for the training of foreigners present in the library collection, came out in the past 15 years, 20% were published within the last ten years.

The university has nine well-equipped dormitories for foreign students which can accommodate 2918 people. The total area of dormitories is 42,718 m ², living area - 22,242.5 m ². Living area for one student is 6, 3 m ², that meets the standards
(6 m ² of living space). Hostels are located not far from educational and laboratory buildings.
International activity is one of the priorities in the Kabardino-Balkarian State University. Its organizational structure includes the following areas:
• Management of external relations.
• Office of the Dean of Foreign Students.
• Department of the Russian language for foreign students.
• Department of general education courses for foreign students.
• Preparatory Department.
University pays great attention to the organization of leisure of students, graduate students and university employees. KBSU has teaching-scientific and recreation complex at the foot of Elbrus with total area 5.2 hectares for 180 seats and center in New Athos (Republic of Abkhazia) for 96 seats. The Center of aesthetic education and artistic creation established at the University for Leisure Activities the students involved in physical culture and sports; university has three assembly halls, four gymnasiums and gymnasium equipped with modern, original trainers.
KBSU pays great attention to security and control. The university established and constantly improved automated system for access control, introduced special identification cards for students, pupils and teachers. Along with surveillance cameras and "alarm button" cards provide a high level of security. The main objectives: reducing the risk of terrorist threats, the protection of property, and control during public events at the university.

KBSU also pays constant attention to fire safety. In 2008 and 2010, the total cost of fire safety was about 14 million rubles, including the federal budget - about 11 million rubles, and extra-budgetary funds - about 3 million rubles. In December 2009 the university received three sets of fire fighting equipment and 14 sets of video surveillance which let install 114 cameras in all academic buildings.
For the care of foreign students the University has full height clinic, dental clinic, equipped with modern facilities, resort-prevention with 100 seats, which is visited each year by 1,300 people.
Kabardino-Balkarian State University supports scientific, educational and business contacts with 40 foreign universities, research centers and firms of different countries, 24 of which are actively being implemented bilateral agreements on cooperation in scientific and educational spheres.

Extremely important contract have been signed recently with the Department of land resources and research area of the State University of Udine (Italy), University Vergata (Italy), Second University of Naples (Italy), the State University of Abkhazia, University of Toulon (U.S.), the agreement with the Institute for Heavy Ion Research (Germany), the State University after Mirzo Ulugbek (Uzbekistan), the partnership agreement with the organization "Humanitarian assistance Bielefeld" (Germany), the cooperation agreement with the Free University of Berlin (Germany), the agreement with the University of Saksven (The Netherlands).
The new project "Linguistic database KBSU in London" has great importance, it is aimed at enhancing academic mobility of teachers and students of KBSU.
Current  year, Institute for Advanced Studies and KBSU PRO under contract with the UNICEF program "Making Peace and Tolerance" held training tutors from the five republics of North Caucasus (Kabardino-Balkaria, North Ossetia-Alania, Ingushetia, the Chechen Republic, the Republic of Dagestan)and during this training were 220 people trained.
Institute for Advanced Studies and PRO KBSU also participates in the international project of the Fund "New Eurasia" - "Community schools in Russia: a new generation." As part of this project 2 republican workshops were held in KBR.
Collaboration of KBSU and the University of Granada (Spain) continued at a high level during 2011. KBSU is a member of the International Centre for the Study of languages of small peoples in different parts of the world (section "Caucasian languages").
Employees of the University participate in the annual international conference on languages, culture and education. Professor Gabunia Z.M. participates with Professor Rafael Guzman Tirado in a joint government project "Operation of minority languages in the third millennium and the challenges of globalization."
KBSU participates in the international project of the University of Granada, "Typology of treatment in different systems language" not only with the participation of Russia (KBSU, MSU, RAS, Udmurtia State University), but also Bulgaria, Spain and Georgia.
Currently, the Kabardino-Balkarian State University has productive discussions with the University of Granada for the inclusion of KBSU in the project to start the International Centre for the Study of languages of small peoples in different parts of the world. Participation of KBSU in this project has great importance for a comprehensive study of languages of the North Caucasus.

In September 2011 delegation of the University of Granada (Spain) visited KBSU. During the talks, agreed:
- open at KBSU Research and Education Center of the Spanish language and culture with the participation of the University of Granada;
-to perform joint scientific-research work;
- to prepare scientific and pedagogical staff;

Negotiations are being held with the Republic of Austria cultural attaches on the project of organization of Austrian library at KBSU.
KBSU has long cooperation with the University of DAAD. The project also conducted meetings between representatives of DAAD with students of KBSU, and also online testing of students' knowledge of German with the issuance of certificates.
At the department of Economics Two Russian-German conferences "Problems and prospects of Russian-German cooperation" in the framework of the festival" Days of Germany in Nalchik." were held.
Together with the Italian universities of Udine, Naples and Vergata KBSU involved in the implementation of basic and applied research projects carried out with the support of national and international funds.
KBSU cooperates with the American Foundation of Civil Research.

The university also contacts with the University of Rome, botanical gardens of Ireland, Missuri (USA), the University of Berlin after Humboldt, the State University if Mexico(join scientific project), the Institute of natural materials(Poznan, Poland).

Faculty of Medicine participates in four joint projects:
1) clinical and laboratory evaluation of the effectiveness of the correction of oxidative stress in patients with bacterial infections of drug "immugen" (with the Institute of Pathology of the skin, Italy);
2) study of the antioxidant properties of herbal remedies on the basis of the fermented raw materials (by Nishi, Japan);
3) clinical and laboratory study of the effectiveness of drug therapy, consisting of antioxidant vitamins and amino acids in patients with herpetic infection (with the Institute of Pathology of the skin, Italy);
4) The German-Russian agreement on partnership between KBSU the organization "Humanitarian assistance Bielefeld" (Germany) on the non-profit mutual, amicable partnership (mutual exchange of information and experts in the field of education.)

Department of Physics, actively collaborating with the Institute of Metal Physics NAS of Ukraine, was established a joint research laboratory. Department of crystal x-ray diffraction crystal optics supports relationships with the science center of Mexico, also has a solid monographic publications in Ukraine, in London. Department of Biology has established a scientific cooperation with the Human Genome Center of Molecular Medicine and Genetics in California, with the Estonian Biocentre (Tartu).

Department of Physics, collaborating with the following foreign universities:
Institute of Physics and Astronomy, Aarhus (Denmark), together with the Department of the CMP takes part in collaboration Aarhus CERN on planning and conducting of an accelerator experiments in the European accelerator center.
The good effect is expected from the co-operation of Department of Physics with the Institute of instrumentation (Germany) on the application of X-ray capillary optics in low-background experiments.
Equally important conducted and become traditional the presentations of programs at the university:
- The Fulbright Program;
- German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD);
- Cooperation with the funds - the Makkaturov Fund, Carnegie Fund, the Goethe Institute, Jena University after Schiller, embassies of different countries, the American Fund of Civil Research, participating in the All-Russian open competition for the scholarships of President of the Russian Federation, program of international visits (USA), working in summer camps and summer language courses, etc.

One of the important areas of working KBSU in the field of international cooperation is the development of academic mobility. In 2011 was organized eight trips abroad of KBSU professors for giving lectures and implementation of joint research. Employees of the Department of Geometry and Higher Algebra Zhurtov A.H. and Nirova M.S. in the framework of the joint Russian-Slovenia research project went to Slovenia to lecture at the University of Maribor.
In a joint project of the University of Jordan, Circassian Benevolent Society of Amman and KBSU annually takes place foreign language practices for the students of the Institute of Philology, specialization, "Arabic language." Guest student interns say about good organization and working conditions of practice at the University of Jordan.
During the year of training and skills development, and also the language courses abroad (France, Germany, UK, Spain, Jordan) were trained 26 staff members and students of KBSU.
In KBSU were invited scholarships from foreign countries (Herbert Arlt - Austria, Holger Karsten - Germany Lednev O.B. - Pisa, Italy, Lutz Richter - Leipzig, Ali Churey - Turkey, Berezovsky A.A. - Ukraine, Gagnidze R. I. - Georgia, etc.).
Kabardino-Balkarian State University four years in a row holds the International Conference "Innovations in Modern Medicine." 4th International Scientific Conference was held in the University of Istanbul (Turkey) in September 2011.
The conference provides real chances to establish partnerships in science and education area with the scientists of Europe, the USA, countries of the Middle East, to share with the innovative therapies.
In the conference was participated the representatives from Turkey, Russia, Germany, Jordan, Syria, USA, China, UAE, Sweden and Austria.
Teachers of KBSU made 18 reports on the current problems of medicine.
Another traditional 5th international conference on "Innovations in Modern Medicine" will be held in Amman (Jordan) in October 2012.
Only in 2010-2011 KBSU held 22 international conferences, where were took part 1650 scientists from Russia and foreign countries. Our staff made 186 reports at international conferences in other countries and in Russia.
It should be emphasized that in 2010-2011, in various international conferences, competitions, took part 40 students and graduate students, including foreign students.

There are 3 fraternity associations of foreign students: Turkey, Jordan and Syria. Their work provides a timely resolution of all issues of domestic and inter-personal nature. The work of fraternity association of foreign students is coordinated by representatives of Circassian charity associations of Syria, Jordan, Turkey, and by our graduates Orfan Barsik (Syria), Muhammad Shamil Issa (Jordan), Tetik Oguz (Turkey), and by the curators from the number of teachers of the Department of the Russian language.
In the works by realization of export of educational services of KBSU are actively uses the possibilities of "Overseas Training and Consulting Center of KBSU" in Damascus (Syria). Centre is headed by Faiz Cray a graduate of KBSU in 1972.
A similar center was established in the spring of 2011 in Palestine. Centre is headed by a graduate of the St. Petersburg Pedagogical University, PhD, Omar Mahamid. With his support, realizes the selection of candidates for study in KBSU on the contract basis, prepared cooperation agreement with the Palestinian University "Al-Najah" and "Open University of Israel."
